This article is over 10 months old The offending eHarmony advert. Upholding a complaint about a billboard ad on London Underground, the Advertising Standards Authority ASA said the claim was misleading because eHarmony could not prove its service provided a greater chance of finding lasting love. The offending advertisement, which was seen by the complainant in July last year, said: It said there was no proof people were any more likely to meet partners through the eHarmony website than by other means, online or offline, such as social networking, at work, through friends or in a bar or club. David Lipsey, joint chair of the all-party parliamentary group on statistics, who lodged the complaint, welcomed the ASA ruling. It uses a closely guarded compatibility matching algorithm to pair users, and requires them to complete lengthy relationship questionnaires to determine their personality traits, values, interests and other factors. In its defence, it told the ASA the algorithm was based on data collected from more than 50, married couples in 23 different countries, which it said resulted in statistical models yielding cut-off thresholds for scores indicating a high probability of successful relationships if married. The dating service submitted copies of two published studies that reported higher levels of marital satisfaction for couples who met through eHarmony than any other offline or online methods.

The Emirates Air Line in Greenwich has mysteriously fallen off the map, leaving a random floating cable car on the bank of the Thames. Don’t worry if you’re one of the four people who uses the Emirates cable car, because it’s still running. Same with the Kensington Olympia line – this is all to do with internet glitches.

Sadly, too good to be true! Here’s what Grindr said to me, via email: While we’d love to believe that the best-built men in the world all dressed up in Lycra and congregating in one place can generate a huge increase in Grindr traffic, we can say with confidence that the arrival of the Olympic teams had little or no effect on our server. The truth is that there are many factors that cause a technological service disruption.
Grindr did crash in recent days, and the People UK story quoted from a Grindr blog post about the crash, but the post never actually mentions the Olympics or, you know, any relationship between the two events. Which is good, because, phew, we want those hard-working athletes to enjoy themselves in London! It claims this happened “within minutes of the first Olympic athletes arriving in London” – but they’re not all arriving in London together. They’re from all over the world, and many go to training camps elsewhere in the UK for a few days before going to London, so “the first to arrive in London” would just have been one more group of people arriving at some of the busiest international airports in the world.
And the link between the Grindr problems and the Olympics was made by those authoritative sources “experts”, “technicians” and “a Londoner”. Probably a wild guess by the IT support guy in the office.
